The Texas State Capitol Building in Austin is the third capitol in the state’s history. The first was a wooden structure used until 1853, followed by a second building that burned in the great capitol fire of 1881. The current building, completed in 1888, was once the seventh-largest building in the world and is now the sixth tallest in the U.S., surpassing even the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
